Get FeatherMC
One jar, the same way you'd run Paper. Download a release or build it yourself from source.
FeatherMC 26.3
The server jar, with Spark built in. Put it in an empty folder or in place of your Paper jar.

- Paper 26.3

FeatherMC is an independent fork. It is not made, endorsed or supported by PaperMC. Please report FeatherMC problems to FeatherMC, not to the Paper team.
Running a new server
Five steps from an empty folder to a running FeatherMC server.
Install Java 25
FeatherMC needs JDK 25. Check what you have:
java -version
Download the jar and launch script
Put feather-release-<version>.jar in an empty folder, along with start.sh (Linux, macOS) or start.bat (Windows) from the FeatherMC repository.
Point the script at your jar
Open the script and set JAR to the filename you downloaded. Set MEMORY to what you can spare. Leave GC_MODE on performance unless you have a small heap.
MEMORY="10G" GC_MODE="performance" JAR="feather-release-26.3.jar"
set GC_MODE=performance set JAR=feather-release-26.3.jar
Start it and accept the EULA
The first start creates eula.txt and stops. Read the Minecraft EULA, set eula=true, then start again.
chmod +x start.sh ./start.sh
start.bat
Check it and tune
Run /spark tps to see how the server is doing. FeatherMC's own options are in feather.yml in the server root, created on first start. Paper's usual files are in config/.
Migrating an existing server
FeatherMC keeps Paper's config filenames, data keys and plugin API, so a Paper 26.3 server moves over by swapping the jar.
- Worlds load as they are.
- Plugins built for Paper load without changes.
- Configs in
config/are read as normal. Values you already set are kept.
Your existing values win. Paper writes every setting into paper-world-defaults.yml, so a migrated server keeps Paper's values for the mob AI throttle and per-chunk save limits. To use FeatherMC's defaults, set them as shown on the features page.
Back up
Stop the server and copy the whole folder somewhere safe.
Swap the jar
Replace the Paper jar with the FeatherMC jar, and update your start command or script to the new filename.
Start and compare
Start up, check the console for Loaded FeatherMC config, and compare /spark tps with what you saw on Paper.
Build it yourself
FeatherMC uses Paper's Gradle and patch setup. You need JDK 25, Git and an internet connection for the first build.
The runnable jar ends up in paper-server/build/libs/ as feather-release-*.jar.
Want to change FeatherMC itself? Read CONTRIBUTING.md in the repository first. Changes to Minecraft's own code go through the patch system.
